BRATTLEBORO -- Spring training and tryouts have begun for many area high school teams this week, and the Colonels’ first varsity games will be played starting the first week of April. So mark those calendars.
The BUHS spring athletic programs will kick-off their respective seasons on Monday, April 8 with four openers, beginning with the Colonels boys baseball team, who will host Burr and Burton on Tenney Field at 5 p.m. Last year, the No. 1-ranked Division 1 team had an incredible 15-1 regular season record, but lost to Rice in a second round playoff upset.
The Colonels softball team, who racked up a 14-2 record last year making them the third-seed as they entered into the Division 1 state tournament, will head to White River Junction on Thursday, April 11 at 5 p.m., for their season opener versus Hartford.
Both the Brattleboro boys and girls lacrosse squads will have to motor to take on their first opponents. The girls, who wrapped up their 2012 season at 9-6, will travel down to Amherst on April 8 for their 4 p.m. opener against the Hurricanes. The boys, who ended last season 12-4, will make the trip to Rutland on April 9, to take on the Raiders at 4:30 p.m.
The Colonels coed track and field team will head to Bellows Falls on April 8 for their first meet, to take on the Terriers, starting at 4 p.m.
The BUHS tennis players will start swinging the racquets that same week, starting with the boys, who make their way to Hartford on April 8 for a 5 p.m. match time. The girls will host Bellow Falls the following day, April 9, at 4:30 p.m., in their opener on the Brattleboro courts.
