BRATTLEBORO -- The Colonels will kick off their varsity spring sports program this week, with three season openers to be held Monday -- on the field, track, and courts.
The Brattleboro baseball team, ranked as the top seed entering last year’s Division 1 playoff bracket, will host Burr and Burton at 5 p.m. at Tenney Field. Along with a mostly junior core, the purple and white also return with seven seniors. The team’s coach is Chris Groeger, who led the Colonels to a state championship in 1999, and was named a Marble Valley League Coach of the Year in 2012.
The girls lacrosse team will travel to Amherst, Ma. for their 4 p.m. opener against the Hurricanes. The ladies went 9-6 last season and fell in the second round of the playoffs. The team is coached by Maud Lonergan. Maddie Rollins and Molly Goodhue return to the team as senior captains.
Also on Monday, coach John Dimick’s coed track and field team will make the trek to Bellows Falls for their first meet, to take on the Terriers, starting at 4 p.m. Last year, the team racked up a handful of state awards at various meets. Sam Kochinskas returns to defend his Division 1 state championship in high jump, and Austin Nichols and Michael Cioffi have come back as the Colonels’ top distance runners, while Greta Pellerin (javelin) and Ursula Casey (hurdles and jumps) will help carry the girls.

Pacers take to the diamond
HINSDALE, N.H. -- The varsity Pacers will host two openers for both baseball and softball on Monday at 4 p.m., as the teams welcome Wilton-Lyndeborough.
The Hinsdale baseball team will be comprised of a young player dynamic at their core, and will rely on senior leadership to help carry them through. Coach Brad Venice will continue to steer the Division 4 crew, as the team puts a difficult 2012 season behind them.
Still coming down off the thrill of guiding a perfect regular season girls basketball team into the history books, coach Terry Bonnette will again head the Hinsdale softball team this year. The ladies are expected to give a strong showing this year, having only lost one senior. Elise Atkins is should be a major contributor from the hill. The first game may prove to be a tough test for the Pacers, since the Warriors were crowned the 2012 state champs.
