BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro boys tennis team won three singles matches and split the doubles to edge Woodstock, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.

The Colonels swept the top three singles matches. Isaiah Ungerleider prevailed 6-0, 6-2; Asa Lane also won 6-0, 6-2; and Benson May outscored his foe 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, the home team’s tandem of Luke Cionci and Jake Gartenstein battled for a 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 decision.

The 2-4 Colonels will play at Burr and Burton on Monday at 5 p.m.

Girls Tennis

Woodstock 5, Brattleboro 2

WOODSTOCK -- The Colonel girls lost to Woodstock in all of their singles matches, but swept in doubles, Friday night.

"It was a big test for us," said BUHS coach Tom Weber. "When we’re full strength we’re a deep team."

Aidan Earley was defeated by Sophie Leiter, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Libby Annis dropped a match to Amelia Sheppard, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Katie Tsukamoto fell to Kathleen Sheppard, 6-4, 6-1 at third singles, Anna Kerlin-Smith lost to Marissa Fabman, 6-4, 6-0 at fourth singles, and Jen Hutton was defeated by Lizzy Miller, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.

Brattleboro’s Kara Piergentili and Linnea Jahn teamed up to beat Katie Miller and Emma McCuraty 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Grace Willingham and Aliza Racine defeated Emma King and Morgan Hartman 6-3, 6-4.

"Piergentili and Jahn were exceptional today," noted Weber.

The 3-2 Colonels host Burr and Burton on Monday.

Bellows Falls 4, MSJ 3

WESTMINSTER -- The Terriers got their first win, Friday night.

"We’re getting better, but there is always room for improvement," said Bellows Falls coach David Chelsey.

At No. 1 singles, Bridget Johnson lost to Jessica Bruso, 3-2, 2-6, Emma Moyna fell to Alex Reedy, 1-6, 1-6 at No. 2 singles, the Terriers’ Alex Harris defeated Lilly Yakunzich, 6-3, 6-1 at third singles, Quinn Lawrence was defeated by Sherry Yhang, 2-6, 4-6 at fourth singles, and McKenzie Brandon handled Nicole Bruso, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5 singles.

Antonio Dufort and Faith Ramos beat Grace Giancola and partner Samantha Lynch, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Taylor Westfall and Kayla Gilcrest won on a walkover.

"We are an inexperienced team, but I see progress," said Chelsey, whose team moves to 1-5 and will play at Springfield today at noon.

MANCHESTER -- After giving up a pair of runs in the first, Noah Rizio began dominating on the hill as the host Bulldogs stole the victory.

Ross Meyer had a pair of hits for the Colonels, who got one hit each from Chris McAuliffe, Evan Parro and Elliot Gragen. Jimmy Mills went the distance for the visitors and only allowed five hits.

Brattleboro will host Fair Haven on Monday, May 6, at 5 p.m.

Softball

Brattleboro 10, Springfield 3

SPRINGFIELD -- Playing with a tweaked back, Kayla Wood still struck out 10, walked zero and scattered five hits to pick up the victory on Thursday.

Interestingly, all 10 of Brattleboro’s runs came with two outs. During the eight-run first, the Colonels got RBIs from Daisy Giroux, Haley Struthers, Rissa Smith and Lou Lou Terwilliger. Maddy Derosia added a run-scoring single in the second, and Sam Harrison singled and scored in the seventh.

Smith went 2-for-4 to lead Brattleboro’s offense, while Bailey Page made a diving catch to anchor the defense. The 4-0 Colonels will play at Drury, in North Adams, Mass., on Tuesday.

Fun Runs

GUILFORD -- Family Fun Runs will be held on Saturday mornings at 9:30 at Guilford Central School. After a group stretch, participants will have a choice of running one, two or three miles. This event is for all ages. This is not a timed event, but rather purely for family fun and fitness. Attending fun runs is an easy way to train for 5K races. This event is open to the public.
