BRATTLEBORO -- The first New England Deaf Disc Golf Junior Championship was held at Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc.’s own 9-hole course on a beautiful May 31 day.
11 students from Austine School for the Deaf, American School for the Deaf (ASD) from CT, and The Learning Center for the Deaf (TLC) from MA came together to participate in the event.
Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and has the least environmental impacts on developing disc golf courses as compared to ball golf. It involves the use of specially-made plastic Frisbee discs, and the targets contain chains to catch the discs into metal baskets.
The goals are to have the least throws from the beginning to the end in the fewest number of throws of the disc, just like ball golf.
The tournament was successful and the students enjoyed their new experiences of playing disc golf at a tournament for the first time.
The championship winners were Team American School for the Deaf.
The individual division winners are: 21-under: Zachary Bessette (ASD), 17-under: Hakeem Shiller (TLC), and Girls: Zoie Haggarty (ASD).
The VCDHH’s 9-hole Disc Golf course was designed and created by Patrick Harris, a 15+ years veteran disc golfer.
Keene State College initially donated $1,000 to purchase four new disc golf baskets, and then various donors have contributed to create a full course with two tees each.
"I would like to see the growth of Disc Golf in southern Vermont, which would benefit everyone when they want to go outside and enjoy nature while playing," Harris said. "My dream is to have a full 18-hole championship-caliber course on one or two of the Brattleboro’s or Windham county’s public lands that can be used by the public and to host major tournaments there as well as to bring in visitors to Southern Vermont. It will require much public support and donations to make it happen."
The VCDHH’s private course is open to the public only on Saturday and Sunday from dawn to dusk. There is a summer league that is held from April to November on every Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Disc Golf tournaments can be arranged by contacting VCDHH. Donations for the course’s improvement can be done by contacting Patrick Harris at VCDHH by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
