BRATTLEBORO -- Kelly Markol and Tammy Claussen, former teammates at Springfield College, will lead their teams to Poultney for a pair of softball state championship games this evening.
Third-seeded Brattleboro (16-2-1) will take on No. 5 Missisquoi (16-3) in the Division 1 finale at 5 p.m., and then top-ranked Leland & Gray (15-3) will face No. 6 Oxbow (13-5) in the Division 3 title tilt at 7:30 p.m.
Both contests will take place on Poultney Elementary School’s Legion Field.
Missisquoi ended a 37-game winning streak by Essex, in an 8-0 rout of the No. 1 seed in the semifinals. Dakota Raleigh fanned seven and threw a three-hitter for the Thunderbirds, which got a 4-for-4 day and three RBIs from Emily Gold. Katie Campbell chipped in with two doubles and she drove in a pair of runs.
Oxbow had a much more difficult time in their Final 4 game, as it took a game-winning hit from Kasie Craig in the eighth inning to get past Enosburg.
The Colonels are looking for their third title in the past four seasons. They have a 10-6 record in championship games, including back-to-back crowns in 2010 and 2011.
The Rebels are looking for their first taste of Vermont gold. In their only other finals appearance, they lost to Peoples 6-5 in 1991.
Brattleboro is led by 2013 Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year Kayla Wood, who has a remarkable 12-1 record in the circle during her high school career.
First baseman Ashley Goddard leads the Leland & Gray offense with a .456 batting average, 21 RBIs and 29 runs scored. Making up the Rebels roster are: coaches Tammy Claussen, Deb Record and Kendra Brooks, along with players Ashley Goddard, Jordan Gouger, Kate McAllister, Kori Griffin, Elizabeth Symanski, Emily Thibault, Summer Bills, Leah Gokey, Elizabeth Gallup, Chelby Nystrom, Kelsey Bruder and Emily Stockwell.
