POULTNEY -- This one was for Jeff Rawson. The assistant coach, who was able to postpone his chemotherapy a day in order to see the Brattleboro softball team play its Division 1 state championship on Legion Field Wednesday, watched his No. 3 Colonels battle for a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Missisquoi Valley Union in extra innings.

Bailey Paige singled to start the bottom of the ninth and then Maddy Derosia doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. But Haley Struthers would then line out to left fielder Sommer Libbey, who threw a dart that beat the tagging Paige home. With Kayla Wood at bat and two away, a wild pitch from MVU's Dakota Raleigh allowed Derosia to score from third.

And the celebration was on.

Wood, who threw a perfect game and struck out 19 batters, finished her high school career with an impressive 13-1 record in the circle.

She shut out all four of her foes during the 2013 postseason, including North Country, BFA-St. Albans, Colchester and Missisquoi.

Raleigh gave up just four hits on the day. Daisy Giroux, Mckinlie Carpenter, Paige and Derosia all hit safely for the winners.

The Colonels finished the season with a 17-2-1 record. It was their third state title in the past four years, having beaten Essex in 2010 and BFA-St. Albans in 2011.
