BRATTLEBORO >> In recent varsity basketball action, the Brattleboro Union High School girls lost to CVU 79-35 and the BUHS boys were defeated by Taconic 56-48.
Morgan Derosia drained two trifectas and Gabby Carpenter knocked down a couple of deep deuces in the first eight minutes, keeping the purple and white within 19-15.
"Best first quarter I have seen — maybe ever. Both teams came out shooting and making them. Punch and counter punch," said BUHS girls coach Paul Freed. "We then got into foul trouble and they took over very quickly."
CVU took a 39-18 lead to the break and had a 57-29 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
"They pressured us the entire game and we couldn't make our shots. They are very good, very big, and very disciplined," stated coach Freed, who added that Kelsea McAuliffe's 3 was his team's lone hoop in the second quarter.
Devin Millerick did an amazing job of handling the full-court pressure and paced the Colonels with seven points. Jaida Henry held her own in the paint and finished with six points.
In the Bay State, Chayse Cunniff and Dylan DeJordy led the Brattleboro boys with 12 and 11 points respectively during an eight-point loss to Taconic.
"In a balanced attack, 10 players scored. The Colonels struggled in the second quarter and then outscored the Braves in the second half," noted BUHS boys coach Joe Rivers.
The 5-6 Colonels will play at Hartford tonight.
