RUTLAND >> The Brattleboro Union High School varsity girls basketball team continually turned the ball over and gave up second shots in the second half and fell to Rutland, 34-28, on Monday evening.
"It was a classic. It reminded me of the old Big East battles of Georgetown, Syracuse, Villanova. Both teams played strong defense and each had to work very hard for anything," said BUHS coach Paul Freed.
The teams were tied at 7-7 after eight minutes of play and the Colonels would take a 15-13 lead to the break.
"They sealed it with good foul shooting in the closing minute or so," noted coach Freed.
Gabby Carpenter finished with a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) to lead the purple and white. Kelsea McAuliffe (6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) was a big lift off the bench, while Hailey Derosia chipped in with five points and five steals.
The 4-10 Colonels will host rival MAU on Friday night at 7.
On Saturday at BAMS, the varsity players will run the annual youth clinic. Grades 5-6 will go from noon to 1:30 p.m. and Grades 1-4 will go from 1:45-3:15 p.m.
