TOWNSHEND >> Gabby Carpenter had a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) and also swatted three shots to propel the Brattleboro varsity girls basketball team to a 53-36 decision over Leland & Gray on Tuesday evening.

"What a hard working, gritty group they are. I'm very impressed," said BUHS coach Paul Freed of the Rebels.

Leland & Gray stole a 13-12 lead in the first quarter, but the Brattleboro defense would play more as a unit in the second frame and the offense put up 18 points in the third to pull away.

Freshman Hailey Derosia finished with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds for the 6-11 Colonels. Megyn Ayotte scored four points off the bench, and starting guard Devin Millerick chipped in with six steals.

Jessie Stockwell and Caroline Tietz each netted nine points to lead the hosts.

Girls Basketball

HINSDALE, N.H. >> Skyler LeClair went off for 25 points to lead Hinsdale to a 50-28 rout of Wilton on Tuesday night at the Stable.

"Both teams played a very uneventful first half. It was 13-10 at halftime. In the second half, we finally started playing with some energy and we began to open it up," said Hinsdale coach Terry Bonnette.

Gabby LeClair and Jacqueline Atkins each scored six points for the 10-4 Pacers, who will host Sunapee on Friday night.

Nordic Skiing

BRATTLEBORO >> Bella Thurber placed third in 12:40, just behind Rutland's Dani Laird (11:41) and BBA's Helena Bigelow (12:28), to pace the Brattleboro varsity girls team at Mount Top.


Rounding out the top five for the Colonels were: Elery Loggia (16th), Sarah Gallagher (17th), Evy Williams (25th) and Angelika Toomey (32nd).

Isaac Freitas-Eagan finished in 10:32 to earn bronze for the Brattleboro boys team. He was followed by teammates Spencer Loggia (6th), Jonah Koch (8th), Dan Burdo (10th) and Tyler Clement (15th).

"The varsity boys have had a very strong season. The varsity girls get stronger with each race," noted BUHS coach Amanda Dixon.

Brattleboro will host the Marble Valley League Freestyle Championship today at the Brattleboro Outing Club at 3 p.m.
