Starting point guard Devin Millerick poured in 11 points to pace the winners. Super sub Shenise Taliaferro followed with nine of her own.
The 14-7 Hornets, who made it to the D-1 final last season, got 12 points from Kylie Acker and nine more from Mychaela Harton. Essex was outscored 11-9 in the extra session.
The 9-12 Colonels will play at No. 6 Saint Johnsbury in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday night at 7. The 12-9 Hilltoppers got 19 points from Kayla Matte and eight from Neva Bostic in Tuesday's victory over South Burlington.
In other Elite 8 games, No. 10 St. Albans will visit No. 2 Rice, No. 4 Burlington will welcome No. 5 North Country, and top-seeded CVU (20-0) will play host to No. 8 MAU.

TOWNSHEND >> Rachel Borgesen and Hannah Buffum scored nine and seven points respectively to lead the Rebels past No. 10 Northfield in Tuesday's Division 3 playdown game.
Katie Lafaille paced the visitors with eight points.
The No. 7 Rebels (12-9) will play at second-seeded Thetford (16-5) in Friday's Division 3 quarterfinal at 7 p.m. No. 1 Enosburg Falls, No. 8 Windsor and No. 11 Oxbow also advanced to the second round.
Oxbow 45, Twin Valley 32
WHITINGHAM >> Kayleigh Trojanowski (13 points) and Sara Walker (12) had the hot hands as the 11th-ranked Olympians upset No. 6 Twin Valley in a Division 3 playdown game on Tuesday evening.
Tayler Courchesne led the hosts with 14 points and three steals. Kirra Courchesne finished with eight points, six rebounds, two steals and four rejections. Brianna Rafus chipped in with five points and six boards.
The Wildcats ended up with a 12-9 record.
