RIPTON >> The Brattleboro Union High School varsity boys Nordic ski team finished third in the state championship meet that was held on Tuesday and Thursday at Rikert. Mount Mansfield (49.0) and CVU (95.0) earned gold and silver respectively, while the purple and white ended up with a score of 174.0.
"It was a crystal clear and cold day up in Ripton. The classic tracks were icy, but fast," said BUHS coach Amanda Dixon of Thursday's conditions. "Classic skiing has not been our strength this season, but the boys saved their best effort for when it really mattered."
Isaac Freitas-Eagan was the runnerup in the 5K individual race on Thursday to lead the Colonel boys. Spencer Loggia (13th), Declan King (18th), and Jonah Koch (19th) rounded out the team's top four.
In the relay event, King skied a very impressive first leg. He was followed by Koch, Loggia, and Freitas-Eagan, as Brattleboro maintained its third place position in Division 1.
"The girls all skied really well in the morning, but were bumped in the overall standing to 7th place due to MAU's show of strength in the relay," stated coach Dixon.
North Country won the girls state title. CVU earned silver, followed by Mount Mansfield, Burlington, MAU, Essex, Brattleboro, BFA-St. Albans, St. Johnsbury, and Colchester.
In the girls individual race, Liz Morse finished 18th to pace the Colonels. Isabella Thurber took 23rd, Sarah Gallagher wound up 25th, and Elery Loggia placed 36th. And that foursome was clocked in 32:34.6 in the relay.
"It has been a terrific season, despite the constant challenge to find suitable snow for training. I am immensely proud of this team, and thrilled by their accomplishments," noted Dixon.
