BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Mallers 9th grade and 11th grade boys AAU basketball teams each played for the King of the Mountain Championship last weekend.
The 11 graders opened up with a much closer than the score would suggest 82-68 win over Footprintz Academy from Queens, N.Y. Ian Fulton-Black of Brattleboro and Jake Blaisdell of Keene, N.H. led the way with 23 points each.
Brattleboro then took on a Vermont CVU High School team called the CVU Hawks. The Mallers came away with a 57-41 victory. Tyler Martin netted 14.
The Albany, N.Y. Warriors didn't put up much of a fight as the Mallers raced to a 69-44 rout. Fulton-Black dropped in 21, Brendan Emond had 16 and Tucker Llewelyen chipped in with 13 points.
The championship game was a rematch with the CVU Hawks. The Hawks overcame a 26-20 halftime deficit to take a 51-50 lead. Brattleboro would go on an 11-1 run for a 61-51 victory. Blaisdell and Fulton-Black each drained a trifecta during the surge.
This is the Grade 11 team's third championship in three weeks and they are now 10-0. Also on the Brattleboro roster are Calvin Lafland, Tony Martinez, Dylan Grover and Troy Felisko.
The JV Mallers scored a season high in their opening game a 65-41 win over the Middlebury Mayhem. BAMS eighth grader Chris Frost led the way with 14 points.
The Brattleboro team then came up a little short, losing to the Glen Falls, N.Y. Tribe 66-40. Hunter Beebe had a season-high 16 points in the loss.
Next up was the Lake George, N.Y. Elite club. In a defensive battle, the Mallers would come back from trailing 37-33 with 1:38 left to squeeze out a 39-37 victory, Beebe would score the Mallers' last six points — clinching the win with two free throws with only 5 seconds left. Login Patnode had four makes from downtown for 12 points.
The team would capture two easy wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals over the Chester Stampede (61-24) and the Rutland Demons (56-35). Tyler Millerick and Dave Erunski each had 21 points in the wins.
The Mallers would have a return match against the Tribe for the championship and lost 65-43. Beebe led the way again with 16 points. The Brattleboro roster also includes Adam Newton, Jackson Buettner, Elliot Bauer, Ben Power and Jack Price.
The Grade 9 team's record is 4-6, with three of those losses against Grade 10 teams. Both Brattleboro AAU teams are coached by Dave Arakelian.
