BRATTLEBORO — Triple towers Kenny Skinner, Gavin Glidden and Lance Robinson combined for six putbacks and 22 points to lead Springfield past host Brattleboro, 30-26, in a thrilling Unified basketball game on Monday afternoon.

"We'll be working on rebounding at practice," said Colonels coach Todd Bell. "We seem to be out-sized no matter who we play against."

Neither team ever trailed by more than four points. The Cosmos continually got the ball to Skinner and Robinson down on the block while Brattleboro's offense ran through playmaker Michael Scherlin.

"We just needed to knock down some shots at the end. They just weren't falling for us," stated Bell, whose team was ahead 26-22 before the visitors ended the game with an 8-0 run.

Brattleboro's Jacob Cochran won the opening tip and later scored on an inbounds play for his team's first points of the contest. Kayli Nicholson wowed the crowd by draining a pair of 15-foot jumpers and Zach Smith scored twice inside to keep the hosts close.

The Colonels opened the second quarter with a 2-3 zone and held the Cosmos to just six points in that eight-minute span. Cody Hellus had a blocked shot and two defensive rebounds while Cochran added a steal and did a nice job of denying passes to the post. Cochran drilled a mid-range jumper and Kayla Parro scored in the paint, assisted by Scherlin, before Brattleboro went to the break down 18-14.

"Kayli and Kayla came in for us and really hustled. They both did a nice job," said coach Bell. "I thought Cody really rebounded well."

The Colonels opened the second half with a 6-0 rally, giving them their first lead of the game. Benjamin Thomas started it with a 15-footer from the right wing, Scherlin tipped in a missed shot and dished it to Smith for a layup on the next trip.

Springfield would score twice inside to take a 22-20 advantage at the end of the third quarter. But Cochran turned a couple of steals into easy baskets and Scherlin set up a Parro layup to put Brattleboro up 26-22 with four minutes remaining.

That's when the visitors put together an 8-0 run that included two chip shots, a pretty post move from Skinner and a foul-line jumper by Jade Craft.

Robinson scored a game-high 10 points to pace the 2-3 Cosmos. Smith and Cochran led the hosts with eight points each, while Parro and Nicholson both chipped in with four points.

The 0-2 Colonels will play at Springfield on Thursday at 4 p.m.
