BRATTLEBORO — Just before the NFL draft began on Thursday, a pair of "can't miss" rookies turned some heads during a varsity softball game on Sawyer Field.
Freshman Hailey Derosia went 3 for 4 and classmate Lauren McKenney drove in six runs to help host Brattleboro sack Fair Haven, 13-4.
"The kids stepped up again. They hit the ball hard," said BUHS coach Kelly Markol. "It's not just one or two players that are hitting for us, we are hitting throughout the lineup."
The Colonels racked up 15 hits, including McKenney's grand slam in the bottom of the first. With Devin Millerick, pinch runner Nicolette Rivas and Emmalee Waite each standing on a base, the first-year varsity player launched an Olivia Bowen pitch over the fence in left.
"Not bad for a rookie," joked Markol after the game. "She has been hitting well all season."
The hosts also got an RBI single from Hannah Wilson in the first frame to go ahead 5-0. In the second, the Colonels made it 8-0 thanks to Wilson's RBI double and a two-run single from McKenney, who reached for a 2-0 offering — with Bowen clearly trying to pitch around her — and drove it up the middle.
Fair Haven cut that lead in half with a four-run fourth. Lizzie Muratorri and Adriana Dalio each delivered an RBI single during the rally, while leadoff hitter Briley Blackbird did the most damage with a two-run single to right.
"They rippped the ball hard in that inning. They might be 0-3, but they have some good ball players on that team. That's a good team," stated Markol.
The Colonels answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Millerick used her blazing speed to reach on an infield single and later score on a wild pitch, and Bridget Duff chipped in with a base knock up the gut.
"Hey, Devin, Hey, Devin. Woot, woot, yeah!" screamed Brattleboro players from the dugout after Millerick raced safely to first.
During Brattleboro's two-run fifth, Millerick drove in a teammate with a ground out to the right side and Wilson capped the scoring with an RBI double to left.
It was an amazing offensive day for Wilson. who finished with one single and three doubles. In the circle, the senior walked just one, gave up nine hits and struck out eight.
"I'm happy with how our kids played," said coach Markol, who watched her freshmen duo combine for five assists on the left side of the infield, saw Millerick run down two fly balls in center, and enjoyed seeing catcher Jamie Mahoney use her rifle arm to attempt a few pick-off throws down to first base.
Millerick and Derosia had three hits apiece for the 5-1 Colonels, who will play at Otter Valley on Saturday.
