Derryfield's Grace Feigl slides across home plate before Hinsdale catcher Shelby Martelle is able to tag her out during Thursday's varsity softball game.

HINSDALE, N.H. >> With the temperature reaching 80 degrees on Thursday afternoon, Hinsdale varsity softball coach Carl Anderson continually reminded his players to stay in the shade and drink ice water.

But there was no way to cool off Derryfield's Grace Feigl. She was on fire.

Feigl went 3 for 4, including one double and a run driven in, as the visiting Cougars crushed the Pacers 13-0 in a game that was stopped in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

"We can't give good teams free outs. I figure that we gave them eight runs," said Anderson, whose Hinsdale team made six errors on the day.

The home fans could only look away as two infielders collided and a routine pop up dropped in, a fly ball was juggled by an outfielder, and several pitches made it to the backstop.

The visitors tallied twice in both the second and third frames to go ahead 4-0. Emily Moll and Victoria Imbrianu each delivered an RBI single to give the Cougars the lead for good.

Brooke Nolan belted a run-scoring double during Derryfield's three-run fourth. Molly Brady and Feigl each added a base knock when the Cougars erupted for six more runs in the fifth.

"Let's get some runs here. Let's be hungry. Let's go," Anderson encouraged from the third base coach's box.

The Pacers tried their best to spoil the shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth. With two away, Jennifer Matuszewski and Kelsey Spindler had back-to-back singles before Samantha Lynch went down swinging on a controversial third strike call.

"I like the fight we've got going on here. This team doesn't give up," said Anderson after the game. "Atkins and Matuszewski have been hitting well for us all year. We just need to be more aggressive up there."

Atkins, who went 2 for 3 at the plate, dropped a Texas Leaguer into center in the first and reached on an infield single in the third. Matuszewski, Spindler and McKenna Cassavaugh all finished with one hit.

Moll went the distance for the victory. She fanned nine, walked just one and scattered five hits. Atkins (5 K's, 6 BB, 7 hits) suffered the loss.

The 2-9 Pacers will play a doubleheader at Newport on Monday and then host Sunapee on Tuesday.

Hinsdale lineup: Hannah Lynch 2B, Jacqueline Atkins P, Jennifer Matuszewski 3B, Kelsey Spindler LF, Samantha Lynch SS, McKenna Cassavaugh 1B, Kelsi Clement RF, Vivian Braun CF, Shelby Martelle C.
