SPRINGFIELD — On Tuesday, the Brattleboro boys and girls track teams swept a seven-school meet and the Bellows Falls teams each wound up second. The Leland & Gray girls finished with seven points.
DJ Snide of Bellows Falls struck gold in the 110 hurdles, 100 and the long jump. Other multiple winners were: Delaney Bullock (800 and 1600) of the Putney School, along with Brattleboro's Jonah Goldenbird (triple jump and pole vault) and Danielle Wood (100 and 200).
Also winning an event were the following student-athletes: Brattleboro's Josh Meachen (1600), Brattleboro's Honnee McManus (400), Michelle Marchica (300 hurdles) of Bellows Falls, Brattleboro's Dan Burdo (800), Brattleboro's Jasper Reed (200), Brattleboro's Ellery Loggia (3200), Brattleboro's Colin Costa-Walsh (3200), Chris Doucet (high jump) of Bellows Falls, Brattleboro's John Lonardo (discus), Keri Ticino (pole vault) of Bellows Falls, Brattleboro's Kai Boyd (javelin), and Shane Clark (javelin) of Bellows Falls.
Leland & Gray's Emma Bourne finsihed fifth in the 1600 and sixth in the 400.
POULTNEY >> Twin Valley was defeated by Poultney, 8-5, on Wednesday.
"We pulled within one in the top half of the fifth, 5-4, but they plated two runs in the bottom half. We had another outstanding game of putting the ball in play and our defense did a great job as well," said Wildcats coach Brian Monroe.
Justin Hicks went 4 for 4 and scored four times for the 6-8 Wildcats, who will continue a rain suspended game today in Townshend at 4:30 p.m.
SAXTONS RIVER PIRATES
SAXTONS RIVER >> Brian Bashaw, Chris Bashaw, Eric Kimball, Michael Labeau, David Lockerby, James Lugo, Rob Meyer, Willie Moore, Justin Spaulding and Dan Zimmer are the local players on the Saxtons River Pirates 18-year-old and up team that plays in Vermont's Green Mountain League.
The Pirates came out on the short end of their four game weekend series against the Lunenburg, Mass. Phillies, the St. Albans Mariners, and the Burlington Brewers.
St. Albans defeated the Pirates 6-5 on a last inning single Sunday morning, wasting an outstanding pitching performance by Derek Osborne. Jason Albert led SR at the plate with two hits. St. Albans had defeated the Pirates on Saturday afternoon 11-0 for their 26th straight win.
A very strong Lunenburg, Mass. team defeated the Pirates 12–1 Saturday morning.
The Burlington Brewers won the final game of the weekend, 7-5. Davis Guyer, Eric Kimball and Jeremy Gilcris had two hits each for the Pirates.
Saxtons River will head north for four games against the Burlington Brewers, St. Albans and a U22 team from Williamstown, Mass. on Memorial Day weekend.
BRATTLEBORO >> Forrester Avard pitched and hit the Giants to a 3-2 win over the Red Sox. Avard threw five innings and went 2 for 3 with a walk-off solo shot in the sixth. Justin Aither hit an RBI double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Sargent. Aaron Petrie threw 4.2 innings of two-run ball for the Sox. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate. Jack Pattison and Ryan Bird also had hits for the Red Sox in a game primarily dominated by the starting pitchers, Avard and Petrie.
