BRATTLEBORO >> Brattleboro's Sam Ognenoff and Zachary Streeter of Bellows Falls will compete for the Vermont team, which will take on the New Hampshire All-Stars in Saturday's Twin State Baseball Classic in Lyndon. BF's Bob Lockerby was named an assistant coach for the Green Mountain Boys.
The first pitch of Game 1 of the doubleheader — two seven-inning games — is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Skip Pound Field on the campus of Lyndon State College. Admission is free. The rain date for the 2016 classic is Sunday.
Originally held from 1983 to 2004, the Twin State Baseball Classic returned to the diamond at Nashua's Holman Stadium in June of 2015, with the two teams splitting a pair of games. The site will alternate between states each year.
Spring Sports Awards
WHITINGHAM >> Twin Valley's pring sports athletes recently received the following awards:
Golf — Tommy Marchione (Male Golfer of the Year), Willie Queenie (Rookie of the Year) and Cole Cunningham (Most Improved).
Baseball — Justin Hicks (Shawn Parris Award). Most Improved went to Hayden Reed, Logan Park and Ethan Fox.
Softball — Brianna Rafus (Offensive MVP), Callie Dix (Defensive MVP), Jarrett Niles (Most Improved) and Kaylea Niles (Coaches Award).
Track and field — Cooper Pell (Most Improved Male), Morgen Janovsky (Most Improved Female), Skyler Boyd (Most Outstanding Male) and Caitlin Hunt (Most Outstanding Female).
Kaylea Niles and Brianna Rafus earned the Vicki Marchegiani Memorial Scholarship, Kirra Courchesne and DJ Lazelle were named the Phil Ware Scholar-Athletes, Nick Nilsen and Kaylea Niles received the Bryan Hampshire awards, the Justin E. Carrier awards went to Brianna Rafus and Justin Hicks, Baylee Crawford and Chris Robinson each made the MVL 1st Team for baseball, Justin Hicks was given MVL Honorable Mention, Brianna Rafus is an MVL 1st Teamer in softball, Kassidy Walkowiak and Karlee Walkowiak were given MVL Honorable Mention.
TOWNSHEND >> Thanks to very generous sponsors, golfers, and volunteers, Grace Cottage Hospital's seventh annual Tee It Up for Health raised over $32,000, after expenses, for Grace Cottage's Patient Care Fund. Thirty-three teams participated in the tournament, held on Saturday, at The Hermitage Club at Haystack Mountain. The winning team was Coop Bills, LindaJane Parson, Scott Cleary, and John Streeter. The second place team was Ward Dannemiller, Eileen Ranslow, Elizabeth Walker, and Scott Wilson. The third place team was Tony Tribuno, Marty Roth, Chad Bullock, and Jack Powers.
BRATTLEBORO >> Alex Bingham went 4 for 4 and Zinabu McNeice belted his league-leading ninth home run as the A's crushed the Reds 16-1 on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Caden Wood had three hits, including a pair of triples, as the Cardinals clocked the Giants 12-2. Bingham and McNeice each slapped three hits, including a grand slam by the latter, when the A's pummeled the Pirates 18-4 on Sunday. Jack Pattison and Sam Henry combined for a two-hitter in the Red Sox' 2-1 decision over the G-men on Saturday, Caden Wood tripled and homered as the Cardinals defeated the Reds 9-1 on Friday, and Elias Gradinger had three hits to help the Cards to a 9-1 rout of the Bucs.
