BRATTLEBORO >> Sam Henry hit two triples from the lead-off spot and also pitched for two innings to lead the Red Sox to an 18-5 decision over the Pirates. Brock Longe had three base hits and pitched three innings out of the bullpen. Owen Gallagher also had three hits while Jack Pattison and Brody Bogert each had two in the Sox' final game. The Pirates' offense was led by Patrick Gagliardi and Alex Carpenter who each went 1 for 3. Carpenter also speared several line drives and played solidly at shortstop. Sam Madow led a late Bucs' rally with a clutch double and Waylund Walsh had an RBI single.
The Athletics finished off a miraculous 15-0 season in a game that will go down as a classic. Zinabu McNeice was the star again as he held the Cards to two runs on two hits in 4.1 innings, pitching the A's to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals. He also dove to catch a pop-up at shortstop and added an exclamation point to the victory with his 10th home run. All-Star lead-off hitter Charlie Clark scored two of the A's runs and Alex Bingham closed out the game with 1.2 innings of relief. Cardinals All-Star Caden Wood pitched into the fifth inning and held the prolific A's offense to just three runs on no hits. Dallin Wachtelhausen hit a clutch RBI single in the first to give the Cardinals an early lead.
SAXTONS RIVER PIRATES
SAXTONS RIVER >> On Sunday afternoon, the Saxtons River Pirates dropped a doubleheader to the South Burlington Expos, losing the first game 5-3 in extra innings and dropping the nightcap 7-1.
Alex Drost pitched eight strong innings in Game 1, giving up two runs over eight innings while striking out six and giving up four hits. The Expos scored three times in the top of the ninth off two Pirate relievers. Andrew Robbins, Jeremy Currie, Shane Tansey and Willie Moore had two hits each for Saxtons River.
In Game 2, the Pirates couldn't find the hitting groove and only managed five hits — two by Jason Albert. Jeremy Gilcris pitched a complete game for Saxtons River, giving up six earned runs.
Saxtons River is at Walpole Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Putney, and Sunday June 26 at home against the Barre Braves.
