BRATTLEBORO >> Maddy Derosia, who is a 2015 Brattleboro Union High School graduate, played in 26 games and scored six runs to help the University of New Haven softball team go 23-15 this past spring.
"My time with the softball team was the highlight of my freshman year. I learned so much and was able to improve as a player, as well as learn important life skills," said the former three-sport star at BUHS.
The Brattleboro softball team went 51-21-1 during Derosia's four seasons, including a state championship her sophomore year. Her classmates on those teams included Casey Manning, Sierra Butler and Samantha Harrison.
"The biggest difference for me between college ball and high school ball was the amount of opportunities I was given to perform in games. Luckily, I was able to learn a lot from watching the upperclassmen on my team play and have become a much stronger player than I was a year ago," stated Derosia. "Another one of the biggest differences was the time commitment. At New Haven, we would have hitting sessions, lift sessions, conditioning sessions, regular practices, and study hall, usually having multiple sessions to attend per day. Being so busy definitely taught me time management."
As a pinch runner, Derosia scored for the Chargers versus Shippensburg, Molloy, Post, Southern New Hampshire, American International, and Adelphi. She also made three defensive plays — two putouts and one assist — against Southern Connecticut State.
"One of my favorite memories of my freshman year was watching the sunrise from the beach with my teammates during our spring training trip to Myrtle Beach. It was an incredible experience that I will definitely never forget," said the daughter of Scott and Janet Derosia.
Maddy, who is majoring in Criminal Justice at UNH, was a Marble Valley League First Team softball player during her junior and senior seasons at BUHS. She was also a First Teamer in soccer and was named All-State in basketball as a high school senior.
