BRATTLEBORO >> The Post 5 American Legion baseball team defeated Rutland 7-6 on Wednesday at Castleton University to capture its first state championship since 1999.
Leif Bigelow, who delivered the game-winning hit in the 11th inning of the title tilt, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The Brattleboro ace went 2-0, fanned 13 and walked five in 21 innings of work.
Sam Ognenoff (1-1) struck out three, walked seven and gave up 10 hits. Chayse Cunniff went 1-0, Kassidi Ramirez fanned four, and Ben Betz was awesome out of the bullpen for Post 5, which only gave up three unearned runs in the entire tourney.
Making the All Tournament Team were Brattleboro's Chris Lasch (2B), Tanner Bell (1B), Matt Dulmaine (OF), Ramirez (OF) and Dan Petrie (Utility). Ethan Illingworth (C) of Bellows Falls was also selected.
Bell went 8 for 27 and drove in seven runs, Ramirez finished with nine hits, Dulmaine had a huge pinch-hit homer and ended up with five RBIs, Cunniff had three sacrifice bunts and drove in six runs, Bigelow drew seven walks and had six hits, and Lasch chipped in with five runs batted in. The Northeast Regional Tournament, which goes from Aug. 3-7, will begin on Wednesday at Muzzy Field in Bristol, Conn. Maine and New Hampshire will face off at 9:30 a.m., followed by Brattleboro against Massachusetts. The Bay Staters will then take on Connecticut at 4:30 p.m., followed by Rhode Island versus Connecticut.
