BRATTLEBORO — Coming off of consecutive 7-3 seasons, the Castleton University football team will open the 2016 season with a home game against Plymouth State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Brattleboro Union High School graduates Tyler Higley and Soren Pelz-Walsh are both captains for the Spartans along with linebacker Darren Callen.
Pelz-Walsh, the team's leading receiver, caught 60 passes for 968 yards and seven scores last season. Higley, a quarterback turned cornerback, set the school record with seven interceptions as a junior.
Higley was once the starting QB for the Colonels. During a 41-20 victory over Essex in 2011, he threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Pelz-Walsh, who would go on to play for Vermont in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, contributed with two interceptions and a TD catch in that Essex game.
"I think from a skill standpoint, we're very deep," said third-year Castleton coach Tony Volpone about the team as a whole. "[We have guys] that make it difficult to not put them in the game because of what we're seeing at practice right now."
After Saturday's opener, the Spartans will host four other games this season. They will welcome Salve Regina on Sept. 17 at noon, Anna Maria on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m., Husson on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. and Maritime (NY) on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
