THETFORD >> The Brattleboro Union High School cross-country teams each placed third during the program's first meet of the season.
"The boys team looked strong through four runners today, but the gap to the fifth runner needs to be reduced significantly for them to be a factor as the season progresses. The girls team looks very strong, with good depth," said Colonels coach John Dimick. "The biggest surprises were the efforts and times of Alexandra Miskovich and Annie Takacs, who both ran personal best times."
The top five finishers for the BUHS girls were Sarah Gallagher (23:03), Elery Loggia (24:42), Miskovich (25:51), Takacs (25:24) and Emilia Dick-Fiora del Fabro (26:05). Also on the team are Liz Morse, Bella Takacs, Molly Patenaude, Kali Gauthier, Emily Gale and Lily Tessitore.
Freitas-Eagan prevailed in 18:46 to lead the Colonel boys, while Spencer Loggia (20:20), Colin Costa-Walsh (20:29), Trevor Kipp (20:45) and Phelan Muller (26:06) rounded out their top five. Also competing for the purple and white were Logan Makay, Paul Aquadro, Caleb Hayes and Cullen O'Hern.
Bellows Falls won the three-team boys meet, which included Thetford and Brattleboro. Cody Tallent (20:03), Nic Potter (20:42), Ian Wallace (21:39), Tim Salter-Roy (21:53) and Jackson Purdy (22:40) all finished in the top 10 for the Terriers. Cam Joy, Gabe Hakimoglu, Ethan Lauricella, Stone Bradbury, Jacob Howarth and Collin Robertson also ran the 3.1-mile course.
Lia Clark placed fourth in 25:07 as the lone competitor for the BF girls.
WESTMINSTER >> Abbe Cravinho and Reaghan Baldasaro each had a hat trick to lead the Bellows Falls varsity field hockey team to an 8-2 victory over MAU.
"Overall, my offense worked hard inside the circle. We still need to work on looking up and finding the net or a teammate to pass to. The links and defense did a good job of moving the ball up the field, but still need to work on transitioning without the ball," said Terriers coach Bethany Coursen.
Molly Kelly and Dani Marchica both scored once for the winners. Kelly and Cravinho each finished up with a couple of assists.
Bellows Falls (2-0) will play at Springfield on Friday.
WESTMINSTER >> Bellows Falls gave up eight first-half goals and eventually lost to Long Trail 11-2. Briana Donahue tallied twice for the 0-2 Terriers, who will host Twin Valley on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
