BENNINGTON >> The Brattleboro Union High School girls and boys cross-country teams placed first and second respectively at a Marble Valley League meet at MAU.

Sarah Gallagher finished second in 21:12, just 12 seconds behind winner Sarah Umphlett of MAU, to lead the Colonel girls. Liz Morse ended up sixth in 22:49, Elery Loggia took eighth in 23:11, Annie Takacs was 11th in 23:47, and Alexandra Miskovich ended up 16th in 24:37.

The Brattleboro girls prevailed with 43 points. MAU was next with 61, Rutland earned bronze with 70, Stratton was next with 88, and BBA finished with 98 points.

"Once again, the Colonels' depth was evident," said BUHS coach John Dimick of the perfomance by his girls team.

Brattleboro's Isaac Freitas-Eagan won his third race of the season, in a time of 17:23, on a difficult course and under hot and humid conditions. Spencer Loggia (7th in 18:29), Colin Costa-Walsh (8th in 18:41), Trevor Kipp (10th in 19:13), and Phelan Muller (40th in 24:11) rounded out the top five for BUHS.

"The boys continue to show great strength through their first four runners," noted coach Dimick.

Stratton won the boys team competition with 24 points, followed by the Colonels (58 points), Rutland (58), MAU (88), and BBA (121). Brattleboro finished first out of the MVL schools.

The BUHS teams will travel to the prestigious Manchester Invitational at Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, where over 2,000 runners will be participating.


Girls Soccer

WESTMINSTER >> Madi Pencek racked up 22 saves for Bellows Falls, which lost to Green Mountain 8-0. Hanna Veysey, Brigid Karl, Meade Pollard, Mycah White, Molly Verespy and Alyssa Ripley did the scoring for the Chieftains. The 0-6 Terriers will face Leland & Gray on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Roller Derby

BRATTLEBORO >> The Elm City Derby Damez will go up against the Bay State Brawlers in a women's roller derby bout on Saturday at Living Memorial Park. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the first whistle is expected at 6 p.m. This is the Damez' last home bout of the season.
