COLCHESTER >> The Colchester varsity football team battled back from a nine-point deficit to beat visiting Brattleboro Union High School, 25-22, on Friday evening.
Following a rare regular-season victory over Middlebury and then a rout of South Burlington, the Colonels had to be feeling good up 22-13 over the Lakers in the second half. But a three-yard run to paydirt from Jerrett Schnabel and then a sneak to the house by quarterback Alex O'Connell gave the hosts a comeback win.
Colchester stole a 13-0 lead, thanks to a 73-yard kick return by Bailey Olson to start the game and then a 54-yard TD run from Matt Hesford.
Brattleboro would score the next 22 points, however. Cheick Diakite had consecutive rushing touchdowns, including a 77-yarder that put the purple and white ahead 14-13. Kolton Ravenna would later find the end zone himself and then a safety gave the Colonels a 22-13 advantage.
Diakite had 34 totes for 220 yards to lead the visitors offensively. Ravenna followed with 56 rushing yards.
The 2-3 Colonels will play at Rutland on Friday at 7 p.m.
