ESSEX, VT. >> Voters in three Vermont towns are set to decide this week if they should consolidate their school districts into one under a new state law.
Act 46 provides tax incentives to districts that consolidate with a goal of saving money through efficiencies and providing equal education to students across a district.
The Burlington Free Press reports residents in Essex, Essex Junction and Westford will vote Tuesday on the district merger.
The new district would be called Essex Westford Educational Community Unified Union School District and serve 10 schools. It would have one school board and one superintendent.
Supporters estimate that about $1 million could be saved by reducing high school tuition costs and overhead in the district.
