BURLINGTON, VT. >> Vermont authorities have released the identities of the state police trooper and federal agent involved in the fatal shooting of a drug suspect.
Police say Kenneth Stephens pointed a muzzle-loading rifle at members of a law enforcement team who smashed open the front door of his Burlington home on Tuesday night during a raid. He was killed when Trooper Matthew Cannon and Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Tim Hoffmann fired 13 rounds from their service rifles.
State police say Cannon was hired as a trooper in 2012 and is a task force officer with the DEA's Burlington office. He has been placed on administrative leave.
Hoffman is assigned to DEA's New England field division.
