WILLISTON, VT. >> Mud Pond Country Park in northwestern Vermont has gained 39 additional acres as well as a mile of new trails for recreational activities such as biking, hiking and skiing.

Vermont Public Radio reports the town of Williston teamed with the Vermont Housing Conservation Board and a local cycling group to raise the $350,000 needed for the purchase and conservation of the land.

The park situated close to Interstate 89 has long been a haven for mountain bikers and outdoors enthusiasts.

Williston Conservation Planner Melinda Scott says a private landowner offered to sell the land to the town instead of developing it himself.

Bob Heiser, Vermont Land Trust's Champlain Valley regional director, says a conversation easement will ensure that the park's recreational opportunities and wildlife habitats are preserved for generations.
