1992 BUHS grad to run in Chicago Marathon
"Jennifer believes that her healthy lifestyle and love of running is the best way to reduce her risk of breast cancer," said Jennifer's husband, Kevin.
The 1992 Brattleboro Union High School graduate chose to run Chicago because it is one of the six World Marathon Majors. The others are Boston, New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
She has been training every day this year, averaging 30-50 miles per week, and often runs with the family dog (Cooper).
"She is feeling good going into this race and is injury free. She has a goal of finishing the marathon in 3:30," noted Kevin.
Her qualifying time was good enough to place her in the first wave of the Chicago Marathon. Kevin and the couple's three kids — Taylor, Emma, Connor — will be in the "Windy City" to cheer Jennifer on, along with several longtime friends.
Sprague ran the 2016 Boston Marathon with a broken foot and still finished in 4:02.35.
"She was disappointed in her result, but just imagine taking every step of a marathon and have that feeling like you are stepping on a knife. She ended up in a walking cast for eight weeks following the marathon," Kevin stated. "That excruciating experience did not change her mind from running another marathon. She must have a short memory or a rather high pain tolerance."
Next on Jennifer's list is the New York City Marathon, which is scheduled for Nov. 5.
