22-mile march raises awareness for veteran suicide

Posted

BRATTLEBORO — On Saturday, Oct. 14, 1LT Lauren Mabie, a native of Brattleboro, and her mother, Vermont State Representative Valerie Stuart will hold the second annual 22 Mile March.

The March brings light to the fact that an average of 22 veterans commit suicide every day.

The 22-mile march will start at the Brattleboro Union High School; participants are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. The March will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. when participants step off to march eleven miles to the Putney Food Co-Op. Participants will then march back along the same route. Participants are welcome to walk as short or long a distance as they want, as long as they have organized their own ride home. Bottled water and snacks will be provided along the route, every three to four miles, for all participants.

This year, marchers will remember real veterans who committed suicide. If you or anyone you know has been personally effected by this issue, and would like a veteran to be remembered, contact Mabie at lauren.mabie@alumni.american.edu, or on whatsapp at +49 151 228 10041. The veteran will then be assigned a person marching.

In future years, Stuart hopes that individuals around the state of Vermont will host their own 22-mile march, so that marchers can cover more distance, and eventually walk the length of the whole state. If you are interested in coordinating your own march, contact Stuart at stuartcomm@gmail.com.

AGoFundMe page exists where Mabie and Stuart's goal is to raise $1,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps rehabilitate veterans with physical and/or mental issues, and serves as an important advocate for the veteran community.
