25th Women's Film Festival to present 38 films


BRATTLEBORO >> The 25th annual Women's Film Festival kicks-off with a gala on Friday, March 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the New England Youth Theatre, 100 Flat Street. The gala will begin with a reception of champagne & hors d'oeuvres, followed by a screening of the film – "MAVIS!" - a spirited and captivating bio-doc that entwines rarely-seen archival material, newly filmed interviews and live performances to celebrate gospel/soul singer Mavis Staples' life.

The festival screens of a total of 38 films from around the world this year – 25 full-length and 13 shorts directed by, and about women over the course of two weeks, beginning with the opening night gala and continuing to Sunday, March 20. 17 documentaries, seven feature films and 14 shorts will be screened at the New England Youth Theatre. Highlights are: "Mustang," Oscar nominated – a stunning film about five sisters in rural Turkey. " Something Better to Come," Yula lives in one of the most desolate places on Earth: the Svalka, the biggest junkyard in Europe. "Joanna," a beautiful and moving Oscar nominated documentary about a young woman with cancer and only three months to live who's determined to make the most of her time with her husband and young son. This portrait of the creative process invites us to question what is real, what is imagined and what we celebrate and sacrifice in life.

Tickets for movies will be $8.50 for general admission, $7.50 for students/seniors. A five-movie pass is available for $35.
