NORTH CLARENDON, VT. >> The Vermont State Board of Education has approved consolidation plans from three Vermont school districts.

The board approved the merger plans from the Rutland South, Addison Central and Rutland Northeast supervisory unions at its monthly meeting on Tuesday in North Clarendon.

Districts are being asked to form study committees and then submit consolidation plans to the state board for approval under Act 46, which provides tax incentives to districts that consolidate their governing structures. The goal is to save money through efficiencies and provide equal education to students across the state.

Vermont Public Radio reports the consolidation plans must be approved by voters in the member towns before going forward.
