Aither cruises in circle, Colonels win

Posted
RUTLAND — Jocelyn Aither went the distance in the circle on Thursday afternoon and the Brattleboro Union High School varsity softball team routed Rutland, 13-2

The winning hurler struck out one, walked one and gave up just four hits.

"We played much better today. Jocelyn did a nice job on the mound. We made good contact and hit the ball well and played solid defense," BUHS coach Kelly Markol stated.

The Colonels combined for 14 hits. Lauren McKenney went 3-for-4, with a pair of doubles and three runs driven in to lead the way. Emmalee Waite, Hailey Derosia and Mariah Powers all finished with three RBI, Jamie Mahoney had a couple of hits, Devin Millerick batted in a run, and Olivia Weeks and Marissa Betit each hit safely.

Brattleboro (2-1) will host Otter Valley on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Track and field

SWANZEY, N.H. — The Hinsdale girls and boys track teams placed second and third respectively in Thursday's five-school meet at Monadnock High School.

Hinsdale's Maggie St. John silvered in the 800 and 3200, qualifying for the state championship meet with her 3200 time, and anchored the Pacers' runner-up 4X400 relay team. Jade McClenon wound up second in the 100 hurdles, Juliana Yialiades added a bronze in the 3200, and coach Glenn Hammett's team took second in the 4X100 relay.

Ryan Boggio struck gold in the high jump and triple jump with state qualifying marks of 5-8 and 38-1 respectively. He also led off for Hinsdale's winning 4x100 relay team.

Caleb Steever, also a member of that 4x100 team, took second in the high jump and triple jump along with a fourth in the long jump — his high jump of 5-6 qualifying him for the state meet. Ezekian Spaulding added a second in the 110 hurdles.

"We were really hoping to eek out a team win today, but came up a little shy. I am thrilled to battle it out with perennial powerhouses like Conant and Monadnock on the boys side," said coach Hammett, whose Pacers will compete in the Fenn Relays in Brattleboro on Friday.
