Arlene and John Rec celebrate 75th Wedding Anniversary


VERNON -- Mr. and Mrs. John Rec celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary on July 22, 2014, at Vernon Green Nursing Home where they live.

Arlene was born in Vernon on Jan. 23, 1920, to Alta Richardson and Guy Smith. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a railroad agent, postmaster and farmer. She grew up with five sisters, Helen, Ruby, Nora, Bernice and Leona, and three brothers, Alan, Elwin and Russell. After going to school in Vernon, she went to Brattleboro High School. Later on, she went to college and graduated from Castleton State College at age 55! Arlene worked as a secretary and teacher’s aide.

John was born in Bondsville, Mass., on May 30, 1920, to Antoinette Sufruski and Leon Rec. His mother was a spinner and his father worked as a railroad telegrapher and postal worker. After attending school in Bondsville he went to high school in Hinsdale, N.H. He was raised with two brothers, Frank and Thadeus. He then served in the Army during World War II. In 1957 he was one of the first to earn his GED and encouraged others to do the same! John worked for the B&M Railroad and post office.

The couple were married in Brattleboro where they made their home for many years. They have two children, Jeanne and Michael. While the children were growing up she volunteered with the Cub Scouts and he was a Little League coach.

Arlene is an artist with many paintings of the local area. John is a member of the VFW, American Legion and Elks. He enjoys music and played the harmonica and accordion. Arlene enjoys music, especially polkas. Other interests include cards, dancing and the Red Sox that they have enjoyed together. Along with a card shower on Tuesday they had cake, sparkling apple-cranberry juice and flowers.
