Baybutt owner being held on kidnapping, sexual assault charges

KEENE, N.H. - The owner of Baybutt Construction was arrested Thursday afternoon and is being held at Cheshire County House of Corrections for lack of $10,000 bail.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, Frederick L. Baybutt was arrested and cited with one count of attempted aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of kidnapping. The affidavit detailing the allegations against Baybutt is sealed until a probable cause hearing on Sept. 3 in Keene District Court.

Baybutt filed for personal bankruptcy in February after a number of projects for which Baybutt Construction was providing contractor services were halted due to lack of non-payment to sub-conctractors. Those projects included the Rockingham Free Public Library in Bellows Falls, Vt., and the Vermont state office building in Brattleboro, Vt. Work overseen by new general contractors has since resumed on both projects.

N.H. State Police Det. Sgt. Shawn Skahan, who is leading the investigation, said the two charges Baybutt is facing have nothing to do with the controversy regarding his construction company.

In his bankruptcy filing, Baybutt claimed he owes between $1 million and $10 million to between 50 and 99 creditors.
