Blessing of the Animals to be held today at Guilford Community Church
GUILFORD -- Everyone is welcome to gather with their beloved pets for a blessing of the animals on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. at the Guilford Community Church at 38 Church Drive. This event is held as part of the fall season focus on endangered species and our stewardship of the earth and its creatures. The service honors St. Francis who encouraged people to think of all creatures as our brothers and sisters.
On Sunday, Oct. 6, the celebration will continue as the Sunday School children work with Laura Pratt who has created a mural. It will be carried to Kenya and completed by children at the Karaguririo School and hung there in honor of Wangari Maathai who worked tirelessly for the preservation of the natural environment.
Oct. 6 is World Communion Sunday and churches around the world celebrate communion and the many forms communion takes in relation to biological diversity. In Guilford, the service will center on our common concern for the earth and its children. Peter Amidon will lead the choir in two anthems, "Had I a Golden Thread" by Eva Cassidy and "Haleluya Pelo tsa rona" (traditional South African) and other international hymns during the communion service.
Pastor Lise Sparrow will offer reflections on the deep wisdom embedded in creation as reflected in Psalm 37.
Everyone is welcome. Nursery and childcare will also be provided. Guilford Community Church is an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ and is fully-handicapped accessible and committed to providing ASL interpreter and hearing assistance, if given notice of interest ahead.
The church is located one mile south of exit 1 of Interstate 91 on Route 5, just in back of the Guilford Country Store. For information, call 802-257-2776 or visit at www.guilfordchurch.org.
