Brattleboro 14s win Babe Ruth state title

SAINT JOHNSBURY — Alex Lier was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded on Sunday, giving the Brattleboro 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team a 7-6 victory over host Saint Johnsbury in the state championship game.

Trailing 4-2, Brattleboro pulled even on a fifth-inning double by Lier.

A solid performance by Brattleboro starting pitcher Greg Fitzgerald was key in holding a powerful Saint Johnsbury lineup to just four runs through five innings. Alex Kendall was strong in relief when Saint J threatened to break the game open.

In the final frame, Saint Johnsbury moved ahead 6-4.

Disciplined at bats helped Brattleboro load the bases and tie the game at 6-6 with two outs. With the bases still juiced, Lier was hit by a pitch to end it.

The Brattleboro 14s will now move on to the Babe Ruth Regional Championships, which will take place July 21-24 in Trumbull, Conn.

The Vermont champions are coached by Soren Pelz-Walsh, Jamie Martell and Mike Bingham. The players on the team are:

Dylan Harden, Liam Styles, Gregory Fitzgerald, Alex Lier, Henry Thurber, Andrew Peloso, Nick Bingham, Alex Kendall, Sam Griffith, Shea Buckley, Jason Cowan and Alex Bingham.
