Brattleboro 7th graders win AAU Tournament

GARDNER, MASS. >> With just three practices and no games under their belts, the Green Mountain Raptors went 4-0 to win The Future Basketball Tournament over the weekend.

On Saturday, The Raptors won their opener in overtime. Raptor team chemistry jelled quickly in their first game together as they stayed calm and determined to take the exciting overtime win.

The Raptors easily took Game 2 Saturday afternoon against a younger, less experienced team. This game's highlight was the superb shooting of Raptor Jonah Bingham.

In the final game of the day, the Raptors defeated probably the top ranked 7th grade team of the tournament with solid play on both offense and defense, hot three-point shooting by Gregory Fitzgerald and all-around play by Nico Hessel. Alex Lier sealed the win with an inbounds pass interception with three seconds to go in the game.

On Sunday morning, the Raptors faced Gansett in the finals. Quinn Grover scored twice on inbounds passing to help the team take the early lead. Matt Sorenson then scored with a solid move to the basket. Trinley Warren added a 3 from deep in the corner with five minutes to go in the half. Spencer Lawrence was strong on the boards with a couple of putbacks for scores. Warren added another trifecta with 2:18 to go, followed by a trey by Fitzgerald. The Raptors ended the first half leading 27-14. Gansett battled back in the opening minutes of the second half, but Grover made two free throws to make it 33-20. A few minutes later, Gabe Packard took a sweet feed from Warren for two points. Shea Buckley's fine ball handling and passing created scoring opportunities for the team. With 55 seconds left, the Raptors led 39-35 and they kept possession of the ball throughout an onslaught of intentional fouls by Gansett. The score stood at 39-35 at the buzzer.

To top off this great weekend, Quinn Grover, Seamus Buckley and Trinley Warren were named to the All Tournament team and Grover won the three-point shooting contest.

The Raptors now have a four-week break to practice and get ready for a long stretch of AAU games from March to June.
