Brattleboro firefighters' breakfast goes 'steady and good'
BRATTLEBORO -- Firefighter Richard Crespo says this year's turn out at the All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast was steady and good.
"Without the people donating, we really wouldn't be as effective as we could be. They do a really good job by helping us out and giving us stuff," he said.
The annual fundraiser for the Brattleboro Firefighter's Benefit Association was held at the West Brattleboro station on Sunday morning.
Brattleboro Fire Chief Mike Bucossi manned the grill where pancakes were being turned over constantly then put into a tray and handed through a window once ready to eat. Inside the station on a table were blueberry, apple cinnamon and plain pancakes being served by firefighters.
Outside, Brattleboro firefighters stood by assisting Bucossi or cooking the sausage. Others showed children the parked fire trucks on display and explained various parts' functions.
Crespo, whose been on the Brattleboro Fire Department for 26 years, told the Reformer that a committee puts the event together. Members of the committee go out and get donations. They also help set up the event.
"There's a lot of us that put a lot into this," said Crespo. "We spend a few nights getting together to make sure we have all our ducks in a row. We also come and gather things from both stations to combine them here and put them altogether. So there's probably a good 10 hours of work easily just in moving everything, getting everything going and collecting all our donations and all that."
