According to a press release from the Brattleboro Police Department, the investigation began in the early morning hours of March 15 when officers were dispatched to a residence at Washington Street.

After speaking with the complainant, detectives went in search of 22-year-old Timothy Belanger. According to the press release, Belanger was suspected of forcing himself onto the alleged victim, committing a sexual assault.

Belanger told officers the act was consensual, but the victim, who was interviewed at Safe Place, insisted Belanger forced himself on her.
