STRATTON >> Throughout the 2015-2016 season, the Stratton Foundation and Stratton Mountain resort staged great events that generated a lot of heart and community giving.
On March 19 and 20, the Stratton Mountain Resort hosted the 4th annual 24 Hours of Stratton, which is an opportunity to ski/ride at Stratton over 24 hours. Since 2012, the event has raised nearly $800,000 to support the Foundation's mission to help southern Vermont children and families living in poverty.
"I was honored and proud to take part in the 24 Hours of Stratton because — regardless of my lack of skill on the slopes — I knew I was part of a winning team which helps raise money for Vermont children living in poverty," said Lt. Governor Phil Scott. "The Stratton Foundation deserves a gold medal for putting on this year's events, raising thousands toward that mission. Capping it all off with the Taste of Vermont was the icing on the cake – or the maple syrup on the pancakes, in Vermont terms. From start to finish, these 24 hours were about Vermonters working together to help our local children in need, all while appreciating what our beautiful state has to offer."
Bluebird skies, the incredible Stratton Mountain's operations team, thousands of resort staff and 195 resilient 24Hour athletes made for an exciting and successful weekend, raising over $119,000 in sponsorship and donations. Weeks leading up to the event, athlete's elicited support for their participation to ski to their heart's content, from 9 a.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. The closing ceremony included a benefit breakfast and awards presentation to top individual and team fundraisers and vertical feet challenge winners. The Stratton Foundation also unveiled their "Heart of Stratton" movie to celebrate its 20th Anniversary, demonstrating the impact that event participation, donations, and sponsorships provide in helping Vermonters receive basic necessities.
Also over the weekend, the Stratton Foundation held an epic 5th Annual Taste of Vermont, welcoming 40 restaurants and chefs to join under one roof, generously presenting tastings to nearly 400 guests, adding $18,000 to the Stratton Foundation's pool for community giving.
The 24 Hours of Stratton and Taste of Vermont have been successful to attract guests from all over New England, as well as to draw a strong crowd of local residents. To some, it's the benefit of giving back to something that has provided their families with sport, memories, and beauty for generations. To others, it is the pleasure of giving back to neighbors and friends who struggle daily to put food on the table, to clothe their children, to provide dental care, and to foster education in order to break the cycle of rural poverty. Regardless of geography or intention, together the Stratton Foundation and Stratton Mountain are 'home' to so many.
This type of big fundraising bestows an opportunity for the Stratton Foundation to make a big impact in a way that changes lives. This year, the Stratton Foundation will be distributing over $150,000 to initiate programs that fill critically needed services in the community, as well as continue to support existing programs, such as children's weekend and summer food programs, community food cupboards, and educational opportunities for first-generation teens.
