Brattleboro Reformer

BRATTLEBORO >> For 16 years Kelly's Dance Academy, run by Kelly Shield and a multitude of talented dance instructors, has been teaching Brattleboro's young dancers every form of dance from Hip-hop to ballet to jazz to tap to lyrical. While dancers from age 2-18 take classes each week year round, it is Kelly's Company Dancers who leap into a bigger commitment. Each season they choreograph and learn dances all winter in order to perform the finished products in competitions throughout New England in the spring.

This past competition season all that hard work paid off. At Starpower, their final competition in May, 27 dancers scored well enough to be invited to the National Competition at Mohegan Sun. Additionally, a fast, contemporary tap dance rendition of the famous "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" performed by Junior Company (ages 10-12) was handed a 'Golden Ticket' to compete at the finale, the Starpower World Championship at the Meadowlands. This is the first time KDA Dance has been invited to the World Championships and the tappers are excited to head to New Jersey in August.

Dancers that make up the KDA 2015-2016 roster are the Rising Stars (ages 6-7) including Anastasia Moshovetis, Emma Houghton, Ciana Grasso and Summer Bartholomew, the Little Stars (ages 7-9) including Avery Bennett, Mallory Newton, Haidyn Anderberg, Rachael White, Leah Lane, Mckenzie Cliche, Cameron Lawrence, Sylvia Moshovetis, Olivia Struthers, Sophia Albright, Amber Kowal, Liyah Sprague, Teagan Thurber, and Alexa Montgomery, the Junior Company (ages 10-12) including Reese Miner, Clara Fagley, Carly Gallivan, Brooke Whelan, Ally Foard, Morgan Houghton, Annika Crego, Charlie Allen, Hope Thibault, Mandi Betit, Katie Tustin, Grace Ainsworth, Tiffany Cullum, and Aspen Willard, and the Senior Company (ages 13-18) including Honour Solari, Ema Baldauf, Jessica Lawrence, Julia Barton, Shadda Cliche, Alyssa Scherlin, Haley Kuralt, Madison Fortier, Katie Burroughs, Michael Scherlin, Brooke Longe, Lexi Miner, Mya Petrie, Brianne Trudeau, Cassidy Gallivan, Kelsey Houghton, Audra Hartman, Gale Allen, Grace Cavanagh, Paige Starkweather, Brandon Dulmaine, Misi Betit, Olivia Weeks, Keyah Miner, Arianna Hrabovsky, and Emily Provencher. All dancers are from Brattleboro and surrounding areas.

With over 200 students, KDA is a lively dance studio with classes for all levels. Summer dance classes are offered as well as week-long summer camp programs. The regular year round dance classes start in September. Most meet after school or on Saturdays and culminate in a recital performed at Keene High School for a large audience in early June. The 2016-2017 registration will open in August. For more information, contact Kelly Shield at, like KDA on Facebook or call 802-254-7499.
