Brattleboro softball team falls, 5-4

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Union High School varsity softball team came back after a tough first inning, only to lose to Springfield, 5-4, on Tuesday at Sawyer Field.

It was the last regular-season home game for the Colonels. Rain threatened the first few minutes but held off until the game was over.

The Cosmos batted around in the first frame and stole a 4-0 lead. Julia Skin singled and scored for the visitors, while Brooke Wiley, Chelsea McAlister and Megan Corchesne also crossed the plate.

Brattleboro coach Kelly Markol brought the home team in for a pep talk and they answered the Cosmos back with runs by Devin Millerick and Mckinlie Carpenter after a ball was hit deep into center field for a double by Maddy Derosia.

Each team only put one batter on base in the second inning. Two Cosmo players were walked in the third while all three Brattleboro girls who went up to bat hit fly balls that resulted in outs.

Brattleboro pitcher Hannah Wilson then struck out two batters and a player was thrown out at first base in the next inning. Four Colonels batters came u, but none of them got further than first base.

The Colonels scored again in the fifth inning when Millerick stole home after a wild pitch left home plate clear for the taking. In the sixth inning, the hosts were behind by one run when Samantha Harrison's RBI deadlocked the game.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Springfield's Sara Locke brought McAlister home with a single that put the Cosmos in the lead for good.

The Colonels' Daisy Giroux hit a double in the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded at third when the game ended.

Giroux and Derosia each had a pair of hits for the purple and white, while Harrison and Casey Manning each hit safely. Pitcher Hannah Wilson fanned eight, walked three and gave up five hits.

Locke (3 K's, 2 BB, 6 hits) picked up the victory. She and Kayla Knight each had a couple of hits for the winners.

The 9-6 Colonels will play again today at Mount Anthony. That will be their last regular season game.

Note: Tuesday was Senior Night and the Colonels honored 12th graders Mckinlie Carpenter, Daisy Giroux and Alex Derosia.
