Brattleboro swimmers rule in pool

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Swim Team scored 2,204 points to win the Southern Vermont Swim League Championship Meet on Saturday in Rutland.

Upper Valley Aquatic Club placed second with 2,030.5 points and Rutland rounded out the top three with 1,965 points. Also competing were Woodstock, Manchester Triton, Bennington Marauders, Killington Sharks, Crv Stingrays, Quechee and Rockingham.

There were 112 total races during the meet. Brattleboro finished first in 39 of those and also broke a dime's worth of SVSL records.

Brattleboro's Atticus Nordmeyer, 8, broke three individual marks and also helped his 8-and-under Freestyle Relay team smash a record. He won the 100 Yard IM in 1:26.72 (besting the record of 1:33.20), took the 25 Yard Fly in 16.17 (the previous record was 17.03) and also prevailed in the 50 Yard Freestyle in 35.48 (just ahead of the 35.59 record that was set in 1999).

Ben Cooper, 17, dominated the backstroke -- winning the 50 in 27.66 (the record was 28.39) and the 100 in 59.53 (breaking the 1:01.01 record). Drew Brooks, 12, broke the 100 Fly mark of 1:15.84 with a time of 1:14.76.

Four Brattleboro boys relay teams broke SVSL records, including the 8-and-under Freestyle, 12-and-under Medley, 12-and-under 200 Freestyle and 19-and-under Medley Relay.

Kyle Picut, Gus Nordmeyer and Drew Brooks were all on both of the 12-and-under relay winners. Trevor Fay was part of the Medley Relay foursome that was clocked in 2:15.77, while Matt Brooks helped the Freestyle Relay team to victory in 2:06.03.

Willem Thurber, Cameron Cruz, Will Hill and Atticus Nordmeyer struck gold in the 8-and-under Freestyle Relay in a tuna-like time of 1:27.53. Cam Wright, Matt Dulmaine, Max Picut and Cooper finished in 1:50.55 to break the 19-and-under Medley Relay mark of 1:52.21.
