Brattleboro to open at Hartford Friday night
BRATTLEBORO— One year after the Chad Pacheco era began with a 41-21 loss to Hartford in the 2015 season opener, the second-year Brattleboro Union High School varsity football coach will be looking for some revenge.
"We are going into this year looking at one game at a time...one play at a time. We are coming off a good year, but we always want to be better," said Pacheco, whose team will visit White River Junction on Friday night at 7,
The Colonels took a 7-0 lead in their first game last year, before the Hurricanes scored 41 straight points to put it away. Jacob Perkins carried the winners with 215 rushing yards and six scores.
Brattleboro would go on to beat South Burlington, Saint Johnsbury, Colchester and rival MAU to finish with a 4-5 record and make the Division 1 playoffs for the first time in 10 years. And they would have won that Wild Card game against CVU had it not been for an inadvertant whistle at the very end.
"The way the season ended last year left a sour taste in our mouth, but we can only control what we can. We had chances to make plays and put that game away, and we didn't. That is our goal this year, to finish," Pacheco stated. "We need to finish tackles, finish drives, finish games. We need to get better each week and put in the work to do so."
Expect the Colonels to pound it between the tackles with running back Cheick Diakite, who ran for five touchdowns against both South Burlington and Saint Johnsbury last season. Diakite made the All State team in 2015, along with offensive lineman Conor Hiner and defensive back Seth Rhodes (Honorable Mention).
"We are excited to play for our awesome fans. There's nothing better than football season," exclaimed the BUHS head coach.
