Brattleboro’s Fairchild paddles to two national titles

BRATTLEBORO -- Michael Fairchild of Brattleboro won the C1 Veteran Class in 1:41:34 and teamed up with Keene, N.H., resident Peter Heed to take the C2 Men’s Veteran Division in 1:35:07 at the USCA National Canoe and Kayak Championships on Aug. 16-17 in Lock Haven, Penn.

"One of my and Peter’s racing goals this year has been to defend our doubles National title achieved last year in Newaygo, Michigan," said Fairchild.

This year, the races were held on a 12-mile course along the Susquehanna River. On Saturday, Fairchild and Heed were able to beat a strong duo from Florida by just over two minutes. On Sunday, Fairchild passed a paddler from Indiana down the stretch to complete the daily double.

The mass start played to the local team’s advantage in the C2 event, with good starts being one of their strong suits. Heed has showed that year after year in the annual River Rat canoe race in Athol, Mass.
