CHITTENDEN >> Under blue skies, at 40 degrees, the Marble Valley League Classic Relays took place on a 1 kilometer ribbon of man-made snow at Mt. Top Resort. Each relay leg consisted of two laps.

Scrambling for the BUHS boys' team was Declan King, who at the first tag had the Colonels in third. The key to the Colonels' ultimate success was Jonah Koch, who skied second; he had the fastest split for his leg by 18 seconds and tagged third skier Spencer Loggia with the Colonels in the lead. Loggia held the lead. Anchoring was Isaac Freitas-Eagan whose performance was nothing short of spectacular. Freitas-Eagan brought the team to victory in 17:11, an 18-second margin over second place finisher BBA and 53 seconds over third place Woodstock.

In the girls race, the battle for second and third place was decided in the fourth leg of the relay. Skiing first for BUHS was Isabella Thurber, who came into the tag zone in third place at 5:11, behind Woodstock and right on the heels of Rutland at 5:10, and closely followed by MAU and BBA at 5:13 and 5:14. Second skier Evy Williams advanced the Colonels to second place. Next came Sarah Gallagher, who held the second place position by five seconds, behind Woodstock and ahead of MAU and BBA. Anchoring was Liz Morse who slipped to fourth place behind three fast finishing legs by first place Woodstock, second MAU and third BBA.

Next week the BUHS Nordic team heads to the State Championships at Rikert in Ripton: skate races and relays on Tuesday, March 1, and classic races and relays on Thursday, March 3.
