Burlington to add more needle disposal boxes to public areas

BURLINGTON, VT. >> In an effort to further prevent the spread of disease, the city of Burlington has started installing used hypodermic needle disposal boxes at public areas across the city.

WPTZ-TV reports the idea behind the initiative is that by giving residents more opportunities to dispose of their needles properly, they won't leave them out in public.

A disposal box has been already placed in the bathrooms at city hall. Burlington officials and the state health department say they expect to install more boxes in public buildings throughout the city.

Burlington Parks and Recreation director Jesse Bridges says the issue of dropped needles will continue to be a problem until a more concerted effort is made toward treating addicts.
