Tax prep

Brattleboro: United Way Windham County is offering two programs that provide free federal and state income-tax preparation services to eligible taxpayers: the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and United Way is also partnering with libraries and other community sites to provide access to on a computer with high-speed internet for the public's use. Job hunt

Brattleboro: During the months of March and April, visitors to the Brooks Memorial Library can consult will CCV student intern Ben Howe for help using computer technology for job and career-related tasks. Ben will meet individually with citizens to help them explore careers and online education, prepare resumes, search for jobs, and complete online job applications. Ben's services are provided through a partnership between the Community College of Vermont and the Vermont Department of Libraries, which will place "Job Hunt Helpers" in town libraries in six Vermont communities. Cross dialogue

Brattleboro: Cross-Class Dialogue Circles are a powerful way for people across the class spectrum to come together to talk about their experiences with class, listen to each others stories and perspectives, and then to work together as change makers for economic justice. Engaging with each other across class is empowering, healing and liberating. The next Cross-Class Dialogue Circle will be held on seven Wednesday evenings, 6 to 8:30 p.m., March 9 through June 1. Bellows Falls: On March 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockingham Library, master diver Annette Spaulding will discuss her recent petroglyph find along the Connecticut River in Brattleboro. This is one of two petroglyph sites known to have been submerged under water after the creation of the Vernon Dam over 100 years ago. Spaulding is the first to locate one of the two petroglyph sites. Dance class

Brattleboro: On March 9 from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m., African Dance Vermont presents a West African dance class with Raoul Ombang at 74 Cotton Mill Hill No. 346. Sliding scale of $10 to $15 for dance. Dummerston: The Dummerston Senior Solutions Lunch will be held on March 9 beginning at noon at the Grange in Dummerston Center. Chefs Sallie May and Larry Lynch, Jr., will serve a meal of baked chicken, roasted red potatoes, broccoli-cauliflower-bacon-raisin salad, mixed vegetables with coconut cream cake for dessert. A sugar free dessert option will be available. A donation of $3 for those 60 and over and $4 for the younger set is suggested. Newfane: On March 10 at the Newfane Congregational Church there will be dinner for seniors in Newfane and surrounding communities. The menu includes tomato juice and celery, corned beef with cabbage, carrots, and potatoes, soda bread and ice cream and cookies. The meal is prepared by Winnie Dolan, hosted by Barbara Brooks and served by hard-working volunteers from the church and community and sponsored by Senior Solutions. Townshend: Kim and Sharon will be performing at the West Townshend Pizza Night Concert on March 11. Their songs are in the Appalachian Americana tradition and they accompany themselves on guitar and mandolin. Pizza baking begins at 5 p.m. Build you own pizza, at $10.00 a pie, from a number of tasty ingredients. Beer, wine and other refreshments are also available. Music begins at 6:30 and is free, though donations are appreciated by the musicians.

Bellows Falls: On March 16 at Rockingham Library, the AARP tax assistance program will be providing free tax preparation help to low and moderate income residents. Registration is required. AARP Tax-aide counselors are volunteers who are trained each year on state and federal tax regulations and are certified by the IRS to provide free tax preparation services. Modern anesthesia

Walpole, N.H.: On April 1, starting at 7 p.m. at the Walpole Town Hall, the Walpole Historical Society will host Patti Seymour, who will share her knowledge of the man who once resided in her present home, Horace Wells. As a young man, Wells also attended the Walpole Academy, an esteemed institute for young scholars in the area in the early 1800s. With this local connection as a backdrop, listeners will discover that Wells' life path led him to be recognized as the "discoverer of modern anesthesia." Free and open to the public.

Bellows Falls: Central Elementary School will be hosting its second annual Rockin'Ham 5K on April 2. The 5K will begin and end at the Rockingham Recreation Area on Playground Road, Bellows Falls. Talent show

Townshend: The Community Hope and Action group will be putting on a talent show on April 16 at the Townshend Town Hall. The talent show will include a free dinner from 6 to 7 p.m., and the performances will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. This is an alcohol-free, family-friendly event that is appropriate for all ages.
