'Camp for Common Cause' to benefit Drop-In Center and Morningside Shelter
BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center and Morningside Shelter will stage a night of awareness to raise money as they work toward a common goal: ending homelessness and hunger in the greater Brattleboro area.
Since things are beginning to warm up and the nights become more tolerable, the emergency Overflow Shelter, which serves hundreds of the area's hungry and homeless, has now closed for the season. This leaves Morningside as the only shelter option. However, Morningside operates at capacity with a significant waiting list year-round. The warmer weather does not mean that people stop needing a place to sleep in a safe environment.
As a response, the Drop-In Center and Morningside have teamed up for a fundraiser they are calling "Camp for a Common Cause."
The public is invited to camp out on the Common on Park Place in downtown Brattleboro on Friday, May 3. Campers will be able to help raise money to be split evenly between the two organizations. Campers are encouraged to raise $100 or more for the effort. Then, pitch a tent on the Common the night of Friday, May 3. The goal for this event is to collectively raise $20,000.
Events planned for Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4, include:
-- The Second Annual Melinda Bussino Memorial Food Drive, all day Friday.
-- Chances to win great prizes with the Verizon Prize Wheel.
-- Music, featuring Michael Roberts, Friday night.
-- Pancake breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, by donation.
-- Best Hair/Worst Hair Contest on Saturday morning.
Morning drive personality, Fish, from WKVT, will lead the charge onto the Common and help raise awareness during a day-long broadcast, welcoming the many fundraising campers to their home for the night.
The event will come to a close the following morning as the campers emerge from their tents for breakfast. This breakfast will be open to the community as a fundraising event as well.
