Caraballo trial to begin today in Rutland

MONTPELIER (AP) - A man charged with shooting a Vermont woman he thought had stolen drugs from him is going on trial in federal court in Rutland.

Opening statements in the first-degree murder trial of Frank Caraballo are set for Monday. The trial could last two weeks.

Prosecutors allege that Caraballo, of Holyoke, Mass., walked into the woods of Dummerston on July 29, 2011, with Melissa Barratt, of Bellows Falls. They say he shot her in the head.

The killing was unusual in Vermont, where most killings stem from domestic disputes or occur during alcohol or drug-fueled arguments.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys declined to comment.
